Synopsis java.io.File: Want to get available disk space

Description

We need to be able to find how much space is
available on a given disk without having to use
native code. If I want to write an installation
program in 100% pure Java, I can't because I
can't find out if there is enough space
available. I could just start copying files
and wait for an error, but that is hardly
professional.

This is not a system-specific function, so
surely there is no customer reason not to give
access to it.

I very much want Java to succeed and have
convinced my company that it is the way to go,
but this kind of unnecessary limitation is
hurting both of us.

I am going to write distributed Java application using RMI. The primary
function of this application is to find available disk space on almost 40-200
systems. If Java does not support basic function calls, that would be serious
matter for Java Platform to cross the CASM.
