Porting the JDK and Java Server to Linux not only
benefits Linux Developers, but also Sun Microsystems.
The more popular platforms your software runs on,
the more competitive it will be. Notice how MS
is scrambling to get IE working under various UNIX
platforms; this corroborates the value of supporting
popular UNIX implementations. Refusal to support
"competing" hardware/software/OSes has historically
been the downfall of many computer corporations.

To run Java Web Server (1.1) on Linux,
edit the jserv script in the bin dir to fix
the path to fstab. Edit the properties file for the
web server
("properties/server/javawebserver/server.properties")
and comment out the uid/gid changes on line 38/42-ish.
It can then be run with
"jserv -nojre"
Ignore the can't load native libraries error as they
are only used to change the uid/gid.
That's it (I hope :)
Not perfect, but it's enough to play with.
I have got a version of the native code which
compiles, but doesn't work. I can pass that on

Here is a copy of a letter I sent to Mark Tebbe at Infoworld
magazine (he is a regular columnist there):
Mark,
I must say without hesitation that Sun Microsystems
could find themselves out of business within the next
2 years if they fail to support and provide an up to date
version of the JVM and JDK for Java on the Linux platform
as an ongoing commitment! The reasons for this are as
follows:
1) Corporate developers who still prefer
Unix are being pressured to switch to
Windows NT by IT management that wants
to consolidate costs. Since the Unix
community failed to provide rivals to
Excel and Word over the years, most of
the corporate Unix shops (especially
on Wall Street where the big money is)
have both SPARC and Intel hardware
living side-by-side on the desktops.
Once NT stabilizes these shops will
re-engineer their mission critical
apps to NT in order to unify their
platforms and reduce costs. The Unix
developer will be left out in the cold,
and Sun will find no buyers for Solaris
or their hardware. 2) Faced with the switch or die prospect
Unix developers and administrators are
pinning their hopes on Java as the future
of application development and perhaps
the survival of Unix into the next century.
However, faced with the rapid pace of change
in the IT industry in order to keep one's
skill set up to date (in this case learning
and developing in Java) one must learn new
paradigms in one's spare time. I can speak
for myself, but I am sure this has a lot
to do with the rapid rise in Linux usage
reported within corporations, that I have
Linux installed at home and this is where
I do my Java training. No developer has time
to learn on the job.
3) Developers choose Linux because we cannot
afford to constantly shell out money for
Windows NT or Solaris for PC upgrades, and
we cannot afford to constantly buy the latest
and greatest IDE, database, etc. Also, the
support resources in the Linux community
(which include news groups, web sites, and
e-mail) are far superior to any paid support
that you could be put on hold for when you
call a vendor's 800 number. Sun must realize
that the Unix developer (it's life blood)
keeps current not by spending thousands
to go to seminars, but by hacking Linux
into the wee hours of the morning.
4) Unfortunately, the current state of Java
porting projects for Linux are fragmented
and in disarray as we speak. This has led
to some savvy Linux developers to post the
lack of a port to Linux by Sun as a bug
report on Sun's Bug Parade list! Of which
many have already expressed their pleas
for Sun to feel their pain.
I would greatly appreciate it if you could mention
this bug report in your column in order to make others
aware of this dire situation. I for one despise the NT
development framework (Hungarian notation et al.) and
if forced to work with NT I will purchase a Unix
emulator (such as Open NT or MKS) with my own money
if needs be.
Here is the URL of the bug report:

This is a no-brainer.
In very little time, Sun could snatch up a huge
army of very talented developers (like me :) who
are just ACHING to develop cool Java software on
Linux.
Soon, Microsoft will be introducing their new
Java development tools that allow you to very
easily call native Windows functions (oh joy).
They have a new set of foundation classes that
they want us to use instead of JFC. They want
desperately to make Java -only- a language, and
they want software written in that language to
run -only- on Windoze. Microsoft realizes that
a big part of stealing & assimilating Java is to
lure DEVELOPERS into developing software using
their home-brewed extensions and perversions of
Java.
Sun should give the Linux community a fully
supported JDK. It should release the Linux
versions at the same time it releases the
Windows and Solaris versions. We should get
all the goodies too, like the native threads
pack, JDK 1.2, JFC, the Hot Spot compiler, etc.
Legions of developers would become quite enamored
with Sun if they gave us these precious gifts.
Why not foster a formidable community of Java
developers who develop on Linux, where it's
-impossible- to develop MS-Java?
It's a no-brainer.

I would add that a true first-tier implementation would have to include beta
releases.
We are currently working on some enterprise-level components, and are using the
JDK 1.2 beta for the additional feature set, specifically the integrated ORB.
If this was available on Linux, it would help the server portions (in-house
developers are expected to use WindowsNT style hardware, only our customers
(including Sun :) get to purchase real servers) with more real-world test
conditions.

I want to chime in with all the requests for a

back because it might compete with Solaris is
very shortsighted. Where I work the choices are
coming down to NT or Linux, we're doing Java on
NT, and if it doesn't work as well on Linux,
guess what, NT will stay. Solaris isn't an option
on the desktop; and if NT stays, we might as
well use MS tools ... you see where this heads.
Not only does lack of Linux [BeOS, ...] support
look bad, it's very shortsighted. You're

Sun, please port JDK to Linux!!!!!! It makes
business sense. Most of us can't afford an Ultra
at home, especially college students. Right now,
we only have one choice if we want to do some Java
development at home - Windoze 95/NT. If we develop applications using Windoze
95/NT, it's very likely we deploy these applications on NT
systems at work. On the other hand, if we develop under Linux, it's likely we
deploy these applications on Solaris systems at work. So it's
Sun's advantage to port JDK to Linux.

Some additional comments: a Linux JDK should have a native non-X GUI like BISS
AWT, optimized for workstations. That gets out of the Motif licensing problem
too, and probably the biggest performance hog.
Secondly, there's an alternative that Sun may not have thought of, but that
would accomplish the same thing in the long run and benefit Sun greatly if they
had the courage to do it: pull a Netscape and give away core Solaris, with
source. You'd still make the money on hardware, support, on Solaris-hosted
software like NFS, servers, custom ports to new hardware, etc., and you'd
increase the developer base by tenfold.
Finally, if Sun does decide to do an official Linux JDK, I'll take a pay cut to
work on it.

I believe the main reason Sun has not supported Linux in their products
is b/c they are afraid of hurting their workstation and servers in the
long run. Period.
They understand that a supported JDK version for Linux would prevent developers
from moving to NT.
However, right now that reason is not strong enough to make them sacrifice
some revenues, which is a big mistake IMHO.

I would consider Linux JDK port to have more potential impact since such a
significant percentage of Linux users are developers (often working on multiple
platforms)
We can run Linux at home and it runs well and there is a lot of development
activity. For many projects, Linux seems to be where the innovation and new
ideas are coming from. Even non-linux users monitor Linux for the latest and
greatest in Unix. Often, developers for Solaris work on Linux at home. Don't
cripple us.
If you want Java to be omnipresent, then the full Linux JDK port should be as
good as the Sun port and relased in sync.

Whats required is a properly ported JVM thats faster and optomized for the
Linux kernel.
Linux is a developers dream. It runs CHEAPLY on x86 machines cleanly, and is
well supported. However, HOWTOs to hack JWS are usless, when the core
functionality of the JVM is still substandard compared to other platforms. (
Don't get me wrong, I am EXTREMELY greatful for all the hard work the Linux
community put into the Java port, and BlackDown is an essential part).

decent testers for your products. And even though

found it very lacking in terms of performance.
At that time, I developped a servlet in Java for a small financial
institution on Linux, but then decided to go for
C++ since Linux-Java was much too slow to developed
on for my taste.
And where is the JIT? The IDE?
Now, it's too late for past projects...
But let me use Java on Linux in the future
by creating an officially supported JDK/JIT/JWS.
You could also work with a dist. maker (RedHat+Blackdown?) to
create a "Java tools CDROM for Linux". That would \

Our company basically has a choice: Deploy
web servers on Linux, or not at all.
The nutshell is that Linux is a more solid
OS platform than anything else on PC hardware,
and non-PC hardware is too expensive (in
terms of sticker price) and risky (in terms of
interoperability, outsourced service and support,
and vendor-neutrality) to merit consideration.
We do open systems development. We like Java
because it's based on open standards and because
it gives us things that other open solutions
(such as C++, or the various Perl/CGI combinations)
don't. We like PC's because open standards
follow along a year or two behind the technology.
For an OS, Linux is just about as open as it gets.

I think that Sun must port the whole JDK for the free unix system Linux.
In my opinion there a advantages for the Linux community and for SUN
Microsystems.
I am one of twenty java software developer. All our development computer are
equiped with windows nt 4.0 :-((.
I think there are the following reasons for this circumstance:
1) personal computer (intel) are cheaper than unix workstations
2) the only usable port from the jdk for intel pc's is the win32 port from sun
I think the result of this reasons in near future will be:
1) computer engineers get familiar with the windows platform
2) computer engineers lose their experience with the unix platform
And this results in the following disadvantages for SUN Microsystems:
Instead of buying professional Unix Servers (e.g. from SUN Microsystems) the
companies buy more and more windows nt server and this is no vision!!!
Therefore it is a must that Sun makes available a high quality jdk port for a
low cost unix system like Linux.

The reason that sun will not support a production grade JDK on Linix is
painfully obvious, there is no need to buy Sloaris Sparc or Solaris x86. The

I prefer Unix to Windows and I dont
like Microsoft. But...
When buying PC, Windows is "default" OS.
I would like to be able to get PC with
installed Solaris on it.
But, no, its not the case. On other hand
we see Windows already installed on
every PC we are buying. Also, we see
final version of JDK for Windows,
but not for Linux or MacOS.
Also we see Sun giving source code
for JDK to Microsoft.
Result - Microsoft is developing WFC
for Java, and Apple will support them.
Why not? They have source code and most
of the developers are already using Windows
for Java development.
I think Sun wants to lose the rest of
Java developers who are using Linux.
And, where is that "JavaOS" ?
Does it exists? And what is Java Station?

then why is this bug voted number one by the
developers themselves? Yes, we are all aware of
the fantastic efforts of Blackdown in the Java-Linux
project, it works quite well. However, support from
Sun would be a real boost. A lot of developers have
been itching to use the new Java 1.2 features, and
without support from Sun, its very slow in coming.
It would not be difficult at all to make a couple
archives available for x86 Linux, statically linked.
Sun wouldn't even have to "officially" support them,
the developers would be very happy even with a simple
"unsupported" compile in a directory in Javasoft's
FTP somewhere. Is this possible?

Current tendency is to close people on Intel/PC,
which means: if you want to run something other

company's not gonna buy it. Which leaves: Linux.

It's ironic, really: If one accepts the
proposition that Java and Win32 are in
competition of some sort (and believe me, even
if Sun doesn't accept it, Microsoft _does_), it
seems obvious that all available inroads into
the Intel architecture should be exploited to
increase Java's "marketshare" while decreasing
that of Win32. A Win32 port is essential, of
course, and JavaPC is a smart idea as well...
but as SolarisX86 is largely held
to be a practical joke of some kind
among serious developers (sad but true, guys),
a Linux port is simply _the_ most obvious move
to make. I doubt a non-hacker would really get
the magnitude of the importance of this decision,
but let me try to paint a picture for you:
It would put stable, reliable Java into the hands
of what is estimated to be a _millions_ strong
community of people who (a) hate Microsoft and
(b) are some of the most skillful and intelligent
computer geeks in the world. You do the math.
Believe me, Microsoft already has.

Since this turned into a request for the JDK
instead of JWS, I'll add my 2 cents:
In addition to an officially support port, I'd
like to see Linux elevated to the same status
(or timetable) as the Solaris and Win32 releases.
I assume you release Win32 versions right away
for market share reasons. I think you would be
suprised at the number of Linux downloads you get.
Like many of the developers I am forced to use NT
at work (and home) because I need access to the
latest toolkits (1.1.6, 1.2b3, ect). Giving us
the ability to develop in Java under a stable,
powerful OS, will be of great benefit to the Java
developer community!
Please give this some consideration.

First, lending my voice. Please port JRE to Linux, presumably everything else
(short of native code in Java3D etc.) is portable.
Second, a heads up: Netscape has identified Linux as important, so important in
fact that it is (or is about to be) a first tier platform for some/all of its
server products. We are no longer talking about cheap software running on the
hardware of people who dream about a better world, this is about deploying
mission-critical enterprise services on Linux.
Now, Sun's position is a little different to Netscape's, in particular, Sun is
a UNIX vendor and making a public act which recognises Linux's importance (even
to a particular group of developers) as being in the same league as Solaris's
importance might represent an image problem for Sun's marketing people, but the
entire Java phenomenon (e.g. the operation of JDC for non-paying customers!)
represents a paradigm shift.
Please, make life a little easier for those who are developing Java on Linux.

I'm doing Java development on Solaris at work.
Without the efforts of some Good Guys out of the
amazing Linux community (many thanks to Randy
Chapman, Steve Byrne, Sergey Nikitin, namely),
I would have been forced to use MS Windows for
my "homework". Unfortunately, as the JDK is very
much a moving target, those private porting
efforts are doomed to stay behind several steps.
Actually, I'm unable to run our application on
the current port of JDK 1.1.5 for Linux, and I'm
wasting time seeking for workarounds.
We want people to be able to run our application
on Linux. We want to be able to develop on Linux.
So what we need is an officially supported JDK
for Linux.
By the way, I would expect the Linux community

bugs in the official JDK releases, and even in

Everybody knows that individual Linux ports of
JDK ain't things a serious developer can count
on.
There are attempts to make a decent portable
Java VM -- Kaffe and Japhar. None of them can
satisfy our needs. Japhar is on the very early
stage of development and Kaffe doesn't have AWT
still.
It is just impossible to ignore Linux as a
development platform nowadays. It is used
around the world by people at home, by students,
and in many companies which can't afford having
a Sun workstation. How can Sun just close their
eyes on that? Linux isn't a competing environment,
it's a path to making UNIX popular. And good
Java implementation can help a big deal here.
It could be just nice to incorporate with Kaffe

Just last week, I met a young developer who was able to convince his company to
convert from Windows NT to Solaris by prototyping it first on Linux.
He wanted to get started on Java and I helped him select some Java books to do
so as I am an avid Java supporter.
I don't use Linux currently and am an Enterprise Developer.
I do believe that support of Linux will:
- result in a large sale of Java Workshop tools as well as the Java Server.
- help developers in their fight for your Java environment in their
workplace.
- help train many additional Java programmers
- and finally but not least, I do believe that UNIX desktop applications
could very well grow signifiantly from this group (I was very impressed with
the students from Harvard had done with the Swing app.
I truly believe that this group of developers that could ADD

These are observations from a greybeard of the industry.
I will not plead for this, but I will recommend it.

Please support Java on Linux fully (JDK, JRE, Swing).
What does Sun see as its core business? Large scale, highly integrated, server
solutions and Java technologies such as net PCs and Java appliances, it
appears. Sun stands to gain most by making Java a credible and portable
application environment, or it will be driven out of business by Microsoft like
every other system vendor.
Solaris for x86 is surely a sideline. Yes, supporting Java on Linux would hurt
Solaris x86, but people would only buy Solaris x86 for institutional reasons
anyway. The added support for Java as an application environment is of far
greater value to Sun.
Even Solaris for SPARC is mainly a server API, not an application API. Sun
promotes Java as a server API in many areas, relegating Solaris to a
"kernel" role. This makes commercial sense as Sun is still very much
a hardware company. In the end it wants to sell SPARC boxes.
In order for Java to win as an application (and general) API it must run as
seamlessly as native executables on the vast majority of current systems. Only
then will Java replace Windows as the platform of choice when writing any new
applications. Sun has far more to gain if Java wins, by selling Java-based
computers and technologies, than it may lose in sales of Solaris.
Microsoft is not going to make Java run native under Windows, even though
technicnically it's very easy for them. They want Java to be just a language,
not a delivery platform, and they will claim that the way to run Java under
Windows is to compile native .EXE or use other proprietary means.
So please, let us have a fully supported JDK, JRE, and supporting technologies
such as Swing for Linux. Surely the eventual success of Java is worth the
effort.

I actually avoided jws for a long time since there
was no Linux version. My company typically develops
Unix apps on cheaper workstations (i386 Linux) and
then transfers to production environments on Sun and
SGI hardware.
Without jws availability on Linux, the only
write once, run anywhere solution seems to
be Apache with Perl CGI (or fast cgi etc).
The 'you can hack up this makefile and it might
work on other unices' is actually laughable.
Perl (free) and apache (free) usually requires
these steps:
./configure
make
make install
Presto magico!
So please, provide a native port of your systems
(JDK/JWS/Beans) to other platforms.
In addition, make a libjsafe! It's hardly fair
to let people download jws with the expectation
of a fully functional web server, only to find
that Sun makes no provision for libjsafe.so
on most platforms. When I enquired about an
SGI version in the fall, I was told that
I could license the code from RSA and write my
own. Excuse me?

1) Sun, please least re-evaluate this one, you're starting to look outright
silly. It's been over two months since you commented on it, and it has over a
thousand votes (TWICE what the #2 problem has)! If you ask for people's
opinion and then ignore them, they get miffed.
2) Linux is to Solaris what Windows 95 is to Windows NT. You use the little
cheap one at home, and deploy your mission critical apps on the big expensive
one at work. Sun, you don't SELL a little cheap version of unix for use at
home! (Or by students, or developers who don't use Unix but are thinking of
learning, like me...) You're not competing with it, it's helping you. Deal
with it.
3) If nobody's reading the comments on this bug anymore, if it's already been

re-submit it eventually. (Each of us. More than once. See point #1.)

c) Is this the bug parade or the whine parade (read

I second the request for an official Sun-port of Java to Linux. Since it is
important to
have as many use Java as possible to have the broadest user base and general
acceptance of Java
in the end-user community, it is vital to have a rock-solid implementation.
Other
operating systems have a company backing it up, and doing the port.
Even though Linux is a competitive Unix for Solaris x86 I believe that the
target for Sun should be as large a user base as
possible and this would be a very efficient way of reaching the lower end of

At Tri-Century we've already made the move to
Linux on our PCs. This includes Java...
But jdk support (through the linux community) lags
a bit... Also, it would be nice to be able to
debug with JWS (I'm evaluating it right now...
with the Linux patch...) The Linux community
needs full Sun support now... With Corel WP 8
suite coming out for under $100 soon, commercial
Red Hat support, Netscape and other things which
run on Linux it would be a shame for Javasoft to
miss the boat... And who do you think is more
probable to migrate (i.e. port code) to the
UltraSparc? A Linux workstation based programming
shop or a Windows 95/NT one?

Many people are using Apache on Linux as

JDK port is harming it's viability, and for many
of us, there are people only too willing to
suggest switching to Microsoft 'solutions'. This

As the RFE has now changed the title and meaning:
Specifically, an engineer at Sun should serve
as ontact person for people maintaining the
current unofficial ports of JDK to Linux, to
accept patches and modifications that propagate
Linux-related changes to the UNIX (Solaris) JDK
source back into the main source tree, providing
builtin support for a configure/makefile/whatever
target "linux". Further differentiation with
respect to i586, Alpha etc. might be worth while.
Providing Steve Byrnes et.al. with an SMI contact

An 'official' port of the JDK to Linux would
make many of our lives nicer. Don't get me wrong,
I'm very grateful that several people have spent
a lot of time providing us with non-offical ports,
and they work well enough for me. I would like
to see Sun acknowledge the Linux community as a
major development community for Java, and provide
us with an offical port of the JDK. I personally
already do all of my Java development on Linux.
Besides, if Sun wants Java to be taken seriously
for it's cross-platform abilities, then there
needs to be offical ports to these environments.

I have developed Java Servlets under Linux using the

community, however it is impossible for them to
maintain a package which is as up-to-date as the
one which comes from Sun. There have been many
times I have wished that there was an official

I feel that if an official port is not maintained,
there will surface clones of Java which are not

Just ask a question is a Win32 developer inetested

Do Solaris users need java - I do not think so,

Just ask a question is a Solaris developer interested

so i run linux
- java can build excellent, optimized servers.
the majority (?still?) of internet servers are
linux-based.
- linux users are (mostly) crazed programmers and
code-hackers who live to sit around and write
cool stuff. java is cool.
- i don't really know how much work it can be to
officially support a linux JDK, a lot of other
applications run on linux and solaris without
many changes.
- has anyone mentioned yet that linux has had
native java binary support for almost a year
now?

By supporting Linux as well as Solaris with the JDK,

While *we* all know that it's already a more-than-viable

Do not underestimate the impact Linux is having!
My company recently made the decision to go all
Microsoft for IS, and are scrapping all the UNIX
desktops except for a few important ones. At our
HQ, this is Sun; here, this is mostly SCO. There
is already a plan to get rid of all the SCO boxes.
This would make us an all-Microsoft shop - except
for the Linux boxes we've put in. The reason
these are staying is because they do their jobs
better, and with less resources, than NT.
Linux, by itself, may be the catalyst for pushing
Java here, since it is the only non-Microsoft
platform with a future here. Apart from it, we
would have no incentive to develop in anything
but MS VC++. It's still a battle, but official
Sun support would help quite a bit!

Yes, this means enough to me to spend all 3 of
my votes on it. I use Linux in my room and for
all of my personal development; the CS department
here (Williams College) uses Suns for the high-end
stuff and Macs for everything else. gcc already
allows me to do my projects on both/either; the
blackdown port is what I use currently, but having
an official, stable (!) port would be wonderful,
and let me have a true cross-platform development
environment - work at home, work in the lab, no
difference. And Sun isn't losing any money on it,
because there's no way I can afford a SPARC anyway -
in fact, this would make me more partial towards

Java has become the language of choice for developers who
want a ticket out of the overly arcane, complex and
proprietary programming environment imposed on them by
Microsoft. Linux is rapidly becoming a platform of choice
for Java (as well as other types of) development by many of
the market's most talented developers.
Sun knows that to succeed, it must woo away as much of the
precious development talent as possible from Microsoft's
closed and proprietary architecture. And, while switching to
Solaris might be a nice idea, the ubiquity and low price of
Intel based hardware combined with the easy availability of
Linux makes that an unlikely scenario. (Sorry, Solaris x86
probably just won't cut it until they start giving away the
source code. ;)
Sun should take this opportunity to leverage the gaining
momentum of the Linux community and do an official port of
the JDK to Linux. Rather than being a threat to Solaris
sales, it might even enhance them by virtue of the fact that
Linux workstations would be a lot easier to integrate into
Solaris environments than those pesky, tempermental Windows
boxes. At the very least it would help to ween people away
from the FUD induced notion that they somehow need to stick
with Windows in order to be "safe."
Come on Sun. This is a golden opportunity for you. Don't
pass it up!

To the linux community, an ultra-sparc running solaris is totally cool. It's
what we'd use at home if we had the money, and what we tell (and help) our
bosses to install at work. Porting our native code to it requires a recompile
and maybe a couple of obvious tweaks.
To the windows community, solaris and ultra-sparc are proprietary non-standard
garbage, by definition obsolete, to be ignored only until it can be replaced.
Porting code to it is a frightening undertaking, requiring skills they don't
haveand intuitively going in the wrong direction.
Which of these two attitudes do you want to promote? You're supporting the
second, and not the first. Why?
P.S. I'm doing Java on OS/2. The resources of IBM are quite sufficient to
keep the OS/2 JDK within three months of the Sun JDK. We don't get stuff like
the 1.2 beta code, but I don't mind. I'm writing code for a living here, I'd
wait until other people had tripped over the most obvious bugs anyway before
trusting my job to it. I'm using 1.1.4 and quite happy to stay here until 1.2
is officially released.
I've been thinking of broadening my skill base by installing Linux on a second
partition and learning Unix, but haven't done so for one reason: the Linux JDK
is almost as bad as the Macintosh's. If I could just get a "slightly
stale but very solid" JDK for it (like the 1.1.4 I'm using now), I'd be
messing with Linux by the weekend.
By the way everybody: Right now Sun's devoting all its efforts to getting Java
1.2 GM'd and out the door. They probably won't even LOOK at this defect (or
get much sleep) until after that happens, and I can't blame them. They're
swamped. Let's not start any email campaigns or anything until after 1.2 is
released. THEN go for blood. :)

Having the JDK on Linux, ported from Sun is
certainly one of the hot-night dreams of all the
Linux O-O programmers, who not turn to languages
like C++, Objective C, Eiffel, etc. just because
they are object oriented. But having Java run

probably give a lot more momentum to Java in the

A _supported_ port of the JDK and JRE to linux (or
a selection of free-OS platforms whether it is
linux or not)
would enable many developers to move their efforts
away from a Microsoft enviroment. This would leave
Microsoft in a position where they would no longer
have as much control over the development
directions (of i.e. JAVA).
I think, that SUN has already realized that the
market is changing, and that the best moneymaker
in the computer business will gradually change
from software to knowledge. As
"application" development becomes a skill posessed
by even novel computerusers.
The JAVA programming language has shown, that
releasing and support semi-free software
can spin-off cash, as well as goodwill and the
most awesome developing speed senn till this date.
Now, take the final decision, and support some
of the free operating systems (Linux, freeBSD..).
Often, development on these platform is actually
easier than on vendor platforms, because the free
platform has to be compatible with every and all
vendor platform in order to survive.
So, the dicision of porting JDK/JRE/Java server
to linux (and actively supporting it) has strong
arguments on both strategic, economic and develop-
ment sides.
Please consider a path that can take SUN and JAVA
even further into the lead in the computer busi-
ness of the future.

If you need any more proof that Linux is the Unix system
of choice for the future, take note that Sun just released
their 64-bit Solaris today, something Linux has had on
_Sun hardware_ for months. That, combined with the recent
effort to standardize a Linux base system across vendors
should make it obvious where the future of Unix lies.
Solaris is a fine product; but its market is too limited
to compete with Linux for the majority of desktops. A
fully-supported JDK for Linux--which would open up a
market for Sun's products like JWS, JavaSafe, etc.--will
make Sun 10 bucks for every dollar it cuts into the
market for Solaris.

I fully agree that timely support for JDK/Linux, as well as other tools, would
be wonderful. I am a Comp. Sci student who has done a little coursework with
Java, and found Blackdown's 1.1.3 port of JDK to be superior to the VMs in any
browsers (to the point that a project that ran fine on Appletviewer for Linux
ran out of memory on a better-equipped NT box). For this environment to
continue to be a viable alternative for those of us (such as college students)
who can't possibly afford workstations, we need versions as up-to-date as the
Wintel and commercial Unix versions - it would help Java, and as several people
noted, not harm Sun. (I wouldn't be using a Pentium 75 if I _could_ have a
Sparc)

Well, for a second comment:
First, I'd like to join with those wondering why there has been no official
response from Sun about this. The subject has been changed -- that is all.
I admin the machines at a small webhosting company -- currently FreeBSD and
Linux for budget reasons (could be either, random sampling). This is my
weekend and evening job. During the day, I write UML and Java code, even
though the code generally runs on Windows systems. This leads me to too odd
difficulties:
Difficulty the first:
I love Java. Both as a language and a platform. I also spend an annoying
amount of time writing Perl and C++ code. Why? Because Java doesn't run well
(in real world situations) on Linux machines. The JRE ports are nice -- just
not ready for prime time yet. I don't run the JWS either (though I do at the
day-job office, on (bleah) WinNT) -- no decent JRE. I'd love to use servlets
instead of CGI -- I don't have a decent JRE. Anyone spotting a trend here?
Difficulty the second:
I'm fighting strenuously to defend Java as a development direction. Even
though companies like Rational are endorsing it with their products, its hard
to show that to a PHB more interested in glitzy demos. If I had an UltraSparc
in my office, I could demonstrate cross platform deployment -- but I don't.
We're restricted to intel based PC hardware. Unfortunately, I can't really use
Linux as the deployment platform -- no stable JRE. An unstable demo would, in
this situation, be a lot worse than none at all.
I can get around a few of these problems by using applets running in Netscape
-- our serious software is Java APPLICATIONS, though. Some of our customers
are beginning to get into NCs (one is in process of switching to ALL NCs) --
these are large commercial accounts. I'd like to help them. To do that, I
really need at least a decent JRE on the Linux platform (which would make a JDK
almost a matter of distributing a couple of extra classes...).
Do our customers all run Suns? No. But our current product /is/ ported to Sun
(heck, we even sold a copy to Sun) -- all customers have the option of using
Sparcs now. Using Java for our next release (as opposed to VC++, or
powerbuilder, both proposed) allows them to stay with sun. Few customers that
would choose Sun now would switch to Linux (other supported platforms are HP-UX
and AIX). We're adding NT to this mix. Our smaller customers may go for Linux
over NT -- none of our Solaris customers will touch Linux with a 10' pole.
Help us help them, please.

As if you needed any more reasons to officially endorse one or more Linux JDK

Single runtime for all java code.
Java services avialable platform wide
to all applications aka Nextstep services.
This is a huge opportunity for Sun and the
Free software community to help each other.
I'm somewhat surpized that sun is missing the
platform which can best intergrate java.
And since Linux runs on so many platforms
switching over to java for as many os services
as possible makes tons of sense to the Linux community.
It's too bad that legal/political
in the Free softaware community and at sun issues stand
in the way of progress.

I think that Sun would greatly further the goal of
"Java everywhere" by porting/supporting current
JDKs on Linux. There is an enormous community of
Linux users; both seasoned and new users. Providing
the JDK on Linux would help provide alternatives to
college students who will be entering industry soon.

Please support Linux! You will have a much
easier time getting Linux users to use Solaris
than NT users. I wouldn't be a UNIX user if it
wasn't for Linux. Linux is where I learned
how to use and love UNIX. If it weren't for
Linux, I would be a Microsoft Visual C++
programmer today. Please Sun, help me purge
NT from my home computer!
While I will able to get a Solaris box at work,
it will be quite awhile before I can afford to
get one at home.

The Java Server Does NOT work on Linux. The SSL
stuff is all native code for which there is no
Linux equivelent. This means that we need support
but more importantly, we need the appropriate
binaries to support SSL on Linux.
All of this could be done through third party
companies having a non-disc aggreement with Sun
and RSA so that they could remove the burden
from Sun of supporting software for non-strategic
platforms. I would be willing to do this if
it is agreeable to Sun.

JWS on Linux = Java Works Slow? I "attempted"
to install JWS on a PPro/200 running RH5.0.
What a joke, after spending about a week
trying to get a stable/working 3rd party port of
JDK to run on Linux I gave up. I did get JWS
installed, but it was unbelievably slow (about 5
minutes between selections during configuration).
We currently have 2 Sparc stations which are
used for development, but I need fast, stable
and inexpensive web servers with Java support!!!
Please, OFFICIALLY, release Linux compatible Java
software and development tools (JDK, JRE, JWS etc.).

It is very frustrating personally and professionally

As a long time proponent of platform independence
(vs. just portability), Java is an outstanding
opportunity to make the OS a commodity and concentrate
development efforts on actual software. To make this
a reality, we need to be able to move our Java apps
(especially Java Web Server) to other OS' and not
only have them run but have them run well. I've
currently got JWS running under WinNT but would
much prefer moving it to Linux. I cannot do that,
however, until the JDK supports native threads for
Linux. As a bonus, support for 1.2 and the JIT would
complete my wish list.

We are developing Java applications that use
Solaris as a front-end and DB2/400 on the back-end.
We develop all Java software using Linux. An
`official' JDK port would greatly enhance our
ability and continuing support for Java, and as
well help Sun create inroads within an
exponentially expanding market.
For everyone's sake, you already have the base
JVM/JDK code. Instead of having us create these
from your specs, it would be SO much easier to
just change appropriate values, and library
references and create a `true' Linux JDK.
Please, and thanks.

Somehow he did it. William H. Gates succeeded in felling the preliminary
injunction against the bundling of IE and Windows (sorry, -doze). Today the
official sales of WIN98 have begun. Now there is little to prevent the 'ALL

not be THE killer-app against Windows, but it could at least help a little. And,
who knows, perhaps it will help A LOT! Isn't this worth a try?

I find it hard to believe that there has been no response to this request
or even acknowledgement of it for the entire duration of this RFE.
Is Java Linux support going to go the way of the NC? Sun didn't put it's
weight
behind the NC (as such, NC World web publication is history), so is this a
pattern?
It seems that the old saying IS true that 'ignore it and it will go away'.
WAKE UP SUN, at least SAY something to the mobs of people who are requesting
this
RFE, or they will go away. Is this what you really want?
(Does SUN even read this stuff? I mean, we're up to 267K of text
that has to be downloaded, doesn't that say something about the support
base?)

I have a modest suggestion for your consideration:
if you offered to give a group of linux developers
the source code to the Solaris version of the JDK,
with a clear agreement that the source code was *not*
to be divulged, they might be able to do the port
without any further resources from Sun. Linux and

I *COULD* work with JDK 1.2 if I wanted to spend
$100 for a 32 bit extension for a 16 bit shell for
an 8 bit operating system developed for 4 bit computers
by a 2 bit company that can't stand one bit of
competition. But that would be silly now wouldn't it?
Or I could buy a sparc, but that would be expensive,
and for a hobbyist it is out of my ballpark. Linux is

and at work, as do some 7-10 million others. Please

Linux is several times faster than NT when installed
on identical PCs. JDK1.1.6 is available (sunsite.unc.edu)
But, if you wan't to really fight Microsoft, do not
worry about Solaris on X86, just have the latest

NT and Solaris. Or, just put the Solaris code out
for someone in the Linux Community to port!!

Reading these comments, I'm reminded of a story I
heard about a fomous Wall Street investor who bought
ConEd (New York electric utility) bonds after the
stock market crash in '29. To those who thought he
was crazy for taking such a risk he responded,
"Nobody is going to turn the lights out on 8 million
people." And, of course, they didn't. Well, nobody
is going to turn the lights out on Linux and, I don't
believe, anybody can turn the lights out on Java either.
In the long run, assuming Sun doesn't play ball, we'll
go on without them just as sure as we'll be here when
Microsoft is a much smaller company which has lost
its lock on the OS market.
