Synopsis Cached URL-downloaded jar files are never, ever deleted
Category java:classes_net
Reported Against 1.2fcs
Release Fixed 1.2(1.2fcs)
State 11-Closed, Unverified, bug
Priority: 3-Medium
Related Bugs 4166799
Submit Date 09-OCT-1998
Description
This is a placeholder for a partial fix of 4166799. While we can't fix that bug
in the most general possible way right now, there's no excuse for not using the
File.deleteOnExit method to delete jar_cache files whenever possible. Otherwise
we risk chewing disk space in users' temporary directories and giving them one
more reason to think that Java is flaky. Some of our partners actually deploy
applications using appletviewer, so this is not just a theoretical problem.

I can only emphasize the note above. We want to
deploy our product (DB admin tool with JDBC, RMI, Swing and lots of icons) with
an applet size of ~900KB. Having this size of an applet, the aforementioned bug
is disagreeable.

BTW: The bug also applies to Java-1.2 (final)

This would be an issue for embedded JVM where storage capabilities are limited
and must be optimally managed. Jini devices will have to deal with the problem.

Please can we have a fix for this problem - we are getting complaints of disk
space being eaten up by temporary files. We are using JRE 1.2.2

Please!!!!!!! This should be easy to fix. Our customers REALLY don't
like losing disk space like this.

This seems a little more that flaky. We are trying to
deploy Peoplesoft Employee Self Service in the HR product
using Java 1.2.2 plug-in, we are getting this problem too.
We need to deploy reliably accross 3 browser Netscape for
Solaris plut Netscape and IE for WIN32

PLEASE NOTE: JDK6 is formerly known as Project Mustang
