Can not reproduce on an Ultra 1 with fastdebug1 build after several runs (each of which contains 160 individual runs of the test). The same test crashes the X server of our group's new Ultra 60s. Will keep trying to reproduce.

After further examination, this occurs only in very low-memory situations, which is why it was not reproducible earlier. Replaced the triggered assert with a test and bailout; we will do this better for Merlin.
