Description
|
Win Installer does not handle out of disk space well
Today we ran into a problem with the installer of Java Web Start under
Windows. Unfortunately this happened in a demo at the customer site where
we wanted to demonstrate how easy it is to install and use Java Web
Start. When the machine is running low on disc space the installer does
not generate an error message. It simply does not install the JRE 1.3
completely. In one case we had the VM installed but non of the class
libraries and in another case it wouldn't install JRE 1.3 at all. It took
us a while to figure out what was going on and the demo was busted.

We should check the disk space but this might not happen for 1.0.1

Yep, this hit us too. It seems that under Windoze if the
user's C drive has less than around 25M free, the JRE
installer fails & leaves things in an unstable state.
Granted, the user is probably in trouble anyway with < 25M
free, but Web Start & JRE installers should handle lack of
resources more gracefully.
A related bummer is that there is a parameter in the Plug-
in/JRE's CAB installer INI file that would appear to handle
this:
MinDiskSpace=NNNNN
but it doesn't seem to have any effect.
PLEASE NOTE: JDK6 is formerly known as Project Mustang
