This RFE has fianaly been comitted to the dolphin (JDK 1.7) release.
Posted Date : 2007-01-16 22:20:04.0

We have not only commit this RFE to JRE 7, but also JRE 6 update release.

The date for JRE 6 update release which has this 64bit JRE support will be early 2009.
Posted Date : 2008-04-09 16:57:04.0

Just an update......
The development/testing of the 64-bit plugin is underway and will be added to JDK6, sometime after the 6u11 release. Stay tuned!
Posted Date : 2008-10-10 21:56:24.0

We are targeting to support this feature in JRE 6u12, we will support Java Plugin/Java webstart on AMD64 arch on both Window and Linux platform.

On linux, we will support Java plugin only on Firefox 3 64bit browser, due to 64bit Firefox is not available on Solaris OS yet, we won't support 64bit Java plugin and Java webstart on Solaris platform at this moment.

Please fix for Tiger. We certainly won't appreciate having to wait 18 months for a fix that's probably trivial on Sun's part.

Running Fedora Core 3 x86_64 on a Sun W1100z. Firefox is 64bit.
Sun Java 64-bit version 1.5.0_02 does not include the browser plugin as it's 32 bit counterpart has done for years. Hoping you'll provide this plugin functionality very soon. It's a major drawback for the Sun AMD/Opterion platform not to do so!

I'm running a 64 bit GNU/Linux distribution on an AMD 64 processor and I am quite happy with it, except that I can't develop and properly view Java applets.
I believe that you should do your best to support this architecture now, since with the EMT64 extensions provided by Intel, the number of 64bit desktop computers, will increase significantly and more people will have the same problem.

I'll agree with this one as well. Ubuntu has native firefox builds in AMD64 format. Currently the only workaround for folks using a 64-bit version of the browser on AMD64 Linux is to use BLACKDOWN Java.

Funny that Sun can't provide Java but a COMPETITOR can...

I'm running GNU/Linux on an AMD64 processor and I've still not found an official Sun java plugin for this arch. Don't you think it's time to release it?

Submitted On 29-AUG-2005
Please provide the plugin ASAP. Linux on AMD64 is gaining more on momentum and people are getting more and more annoyed about not being able to use a browser plugin. This is the kind of thing people remember (meant in a bad way...):

It is essantial strategie to have Java on Desktop and in Browsers. By the way, also fix these applets missbehaviors and bugs. We do earn money with that sort of java-tech.

Sun is partners with Microsoft http://www.sun.com/software/javaenterprisesystem/sun_microsoft_interop.pdf

and AMD http://www.sun.com/amd/

The AMD x64 chipset is not only used in servers but also in desktop workstations. Sun has announced support for the Windows OS (read amd64 bit edition) on Sun hardware.

The Sun Ultra 20 ->workstation<-
http://www.sun.com/desktop/workstation/ultra20/index.jsp

claims support for Solaris 10 and Windows amd64.

What is going to happen when JDK 1.6 is released and ultra 20 owners happily download it only to find it is not fully supported on SUN hardware?

It's now Sept. 10, any word on the plugin/javaws for the AMD64 Mustang?

Windows XP x64 is a desktop OS... plain and simple. The demand WILL come for the 64-bit webstart and plugin... blackdown.org already has it for Linux. We need it... like yesterday.

Please read this article from Microsoft- it explains the 64-bit OS/Browser "state of the nation" so to speak.

http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2005/01/12/351808.aspx

Because there are few 64-bit plugins available, Windows x64 ships with the IE 32bit as the default!

The 64-bit IE is useless without plugins. I need it for ongoing development now. As are others in the community who are working on 64bit web applications. Until Sun makes the plugin, we are all stuck in 32bit land. Sun, please help us out.

Webstart is essential for 64-bit Windows. Is Sun really considering not having this in Mustang? 64-bit Windows may not be mainstream now, but in a year or two it will be - future desktop machines WILL be 64-bit.

Will we seriously have to wait for Dolphin for this? What's that, another 3 years away? I really don't want to have to tell customers two years down the track that they need to run a 32-bit version of the JVM on their 64-bit machines. That certainly doesn't leave a good impression.

I noticed that the title of this RFE only mentions the "plug-in" that's missing. We also need "webstart" included. These two items are common JRE distributions... so I don't think that I'm going out on a limb by asking for webstart too... it's been mentions several times in various posts, but I just want to make sure that this is also included so that we don't have to create another RFE for webstart.

Part of general consideration for a "write once run anywhere" system ought to be a FULL jre - including webstart and java applet plug-in for 64bit windows.
Why _not_ implement this request asap and give us what we need to win new business

Is there an ETA on this? I just installed x64 with latest mustang and oops, doesn't even autorun jars, let alone browser plugin etc... serious problem since I use webstart for much deployment and developers usually prefer to test what they are deploying.

Of course it would be better if SUN could make the x64 version of Web Start and Java Plug-in, but how about the Java source code license? Isn't that an incentive to "just do it" ?

At least make the source code for the plugin and webstart easily available so someone can complile them.

Duh.

This is a must fix issue. Java applets and plugins must be available for AMDx86_64 systems. What is the use of 64 bit processing power.
I run all 64 bit apps on my system. You are not doing the right thing for the AMD community good.
I run FC4 amd64. The only useful browser is firefox without support for this the browsing experience it not good.

Webstart and plugins to support 64-bit browsers are needed immediately. Currently the main uptakers of 64-bit OS's are developers, so for a start there's a reason to compile these in 64-bit, but also as 64-bit CPU's are on the cusp of taking the largest selling volume in desktop PC's. As sales of 64-bit CPU pc's increase so will installations of 64-bit OS's (if the consumers are aware of it or not) and as our customers and yours start failing to run java apps/applets you are going to disenchant more and more people.

For gods sake just take a look at the submit date on this: 14th Jan 2003. 2003 folks! In a few months it will have been 3 years!!! "request for enhancement" should read "urgent requirement to get with the times".
64-bit CPU's = old news.
64-bit OS's = old news.
"not a priority enhancement" = old excuse no longer washing.

Where is Java for the 64-bit platform - Windows and Linux? When can we expect it? Will it be before the 128-bit platform starts or even sooner!
AriesPAMD64

Submitted On 23-OCT-2005
This shoud be fixed as soon as possible. The submitter before me is really right. Why is this taking so incredibly long to make it happen? I could understand if all the 64-bit OS's would be still in beta with yet-to-be-released 64-bit cpu's. But that is not the case. Both Intel and AMD are selling huge numbers of 64-bit capable cpus and all the major Linux distributors have a 64-bit version available. Also Microsoft is even trading in 32-bit licenses for a 64-bit Windows XP version. And yet you are sticking with your version that 64-bit OS's are only used for servers so you don't have to bundle webstart and plugin. Is this so much efford to port those two parts?

Now we are stuck with using a 32bit browser only because there is no java plugin.

Please, please, fix this.

Submitted On 25-OCT-2005
Please release a 64 bit version soon.

Submitted On 27-OCT-2005
I discovered that 5, release 5 has been out since the 20th of October. It still doesn't contain the plugin.

Could you at least have the decency to place a note near the AMD64 downloads that the plugin is still not included? It will save you bandwidth, if you need an argument _you_ can relate to.

To me, Sun Java on AMD64 is turning out to be an ever growing disappointment.

RFE Monitors; CAN YOU PLEASE COMMENT ON THIS
There are growing numbers of 64-bit system users and the evaluation "..deferred to a future release." is no longer valid as releases have come and gone since that statement.
Can you please clarify Sun's position with regards to supporting this technology.

Submitted On 02-NOV-2005
This isreally non-responsive. X86_64 machines are becoming increasingly common, and this RFE has been outstanding for over 18 months. It's particularly ironic, since SUN itself is shipping Opteron-based servers now. I thought SUN was supposed to be a technology leader!

Submitted On 09-NOV-2005
I am not certain that this can even be called an enhancement. Since you offered this functionality with the 32bit version we expect that same function with the 64bit. Anyone who develops using 64bit would want to port all his software over to that platform or at least test it for compatibility.

I agree with everybody else that is almost unbelievable that a company like SUN, who has been touting the benifits of 64-bit computing for more than a decade, has dropped the ball in this case. Is that what SUN has come to? A company that can't even port to the current cutting-edge hardware platform? Is Sun merely rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic for here on out?

Windows 64 Bit is everyone that own's a 64 bit CPU in the x86 line of computers. We didn't buy Windows 64 to use 32 bit applications. We need Sun's expertise in providing us with the Desk Top Java for our Browsers in the 64 bit world. Don't make us have to go to Linux or Solaris for 64 bit computing. Thank You for your support

I'm distressed to learn that no JRE plugin is available for my AMD64 laptop. According to the author of a forum posting, Sun Microsystems considers AMD64 to be a server architecture. Interesting idea; but while my brand new laptop is nice, a server it's not. May we have a Firefox plugin, please? Pretty please?

Running X2 on a WinXPx64.

I don't understand why this is marked as RFE and not a BUG. Having or not having the plugin in the fully released 64-bit JRE is clearly something that should NOT be questioned! More and more users are getting 64-bit computers, many of them are Java developers and Sun is clearly killing the Java platform this way!
As a veteran Java evangelist, I was shocked to find out that my new 64-bit linux machine can run anything but Java applets! I was even more shocked when I saw the submission date of this bug.
What happened? Now that .NOT is around the corner, Sun gave up and don't care about Java anymore?!?

This is ridiculous. Has java been abandoned on Linux? Our company is only buying 64 bit machines these days. Thank god there are other java implementations around.

Submitted On 25-FEB-2006
Well, this bug is more than three years old, is it possible? After three years there's still no implementation? WHAT!? Please, do it.

Submitted On 25-FEB-2006
It's been two years, where is the 64-bit plugin? 32-bit systems are the 8086s of years past. How on earth is technology going to move forward if you're not going support it? You'd be hard pressed today to find someone selling a new desktop PC that does not support the AMD64 instruction set.

Are you expecting the open source community to hijack Java and write their own JVM and call it OpenJava, thus having us dictate what and where Java goes?

Submitted On 25-FEB-2006
We have frozen development on Java applications until the 64-bit platform is fully supported. We'll stick wtih C++ and GTK which is fully supported on ALL platforms.

This is very disappointing. I built my AMD64 (dual core!) system for around $1,500 with parts from Frys, a few months ago. I have tried both Fedora 4 32 bit and Gentoo 64 bit Linux, and the 64 bit system is far faster. If Sun's decision is based on an assumption that AMD64 systems will mostly be servers, all I can say is that I have a $1,500 AMD64 bit desktop system, and I never want to go back to 32 bit. Finally, the whole reason I went with Java ten years ago was the promise of "write once, run anywhere". Java is the heart and soul of Sun, this is huge. Not making 4802695 a top priority will make XEROX's decision to let Jobs and Woz roam their r&d department and try out all their stuff twenty years ago look like a minor lapse in judgement. In this case, the network is not the computer, look at the computer just this once, this is the time to think INSIDE the box. Doofuses!!! When are people going to learn, you can not ignore your core competency - and it isn't Solaris!!! That rant done, I am going to write my first C++ program in over 10 years. Just one Sun Certified Java developer moving on.... who cares. Drop in the bucket or.... ?

Really want this so we can start doing work on 64-bit platforms as media centers. This has held up a lot of stuff. This has put back the project a considerable time as we feel that its not worth investing in Windows XP32 and then switching to XP64. We also wanted to use XP64 with Windows server editions and build on Microsoft Navision.

The lack of a 64-bit plugin makes us wary of Sun as a development base. It feels proprietary. On a personal note I was going to buy some Sun shares but this put me off. When I saw how well Java + Sun supported XML I thought it could be a world beater but everything seems to be in limbo.

Very disappointed.

Linux Workaround:

I am running a Debian AMD64 Etch installation and encountered this trouble myself. The workaround I am currently using is to maintain a 32-bit chroot and install Firefox and the 32-bit Java browser plugin there. I only use the 32-bit browser.

Suffice to say this is a bit ugly. Native 64-bit support would definitely be nice.

WAKE UP CALL! 64BIT DESKTOPS HAVE BEEN HERE FOR YEARS NOW!!!

um... this is REALLY ridiculous! I just downloaded the most recent amd64 1.5.07 jdk update.. and still no javaws/plugin!!! I see that this bug is "open" since 2003?

So basically, I can run all of my PC on amd64 (linux, database, all apps etc), even the netbeans ide runs great, but I can't use javaws or the java plugin with the 64bit java..

I'm reduced to installing the i586 version as well, and linking my firefox to that plugin, and running the javaws from that version. Probably a stupid question, but WHY??? All our new desktop PCs are AMD64 procssor based, NOT servers here (those are more opteron, or multprocessor based, but some are amd64 of course).

cheers... we love java.. but there is this new DESKTOP platform out there guys.. and you aren't supporting it fully!!!

    ..\plugin\share\classes\sun\plugin
    ..\javaws\share\classes\com\sun\javaws

Checkout interesting developer notes at:

I haven't found the time to explore the classes yet (of course, with my AMD64 3500 WinXP x64 environment I can't actually compile and open the applets found there!)

One option is GCJ it works in 64 bit with some caveots, like little to no security. (somthing like - /usr/lib64/gcj-4.1.1/libgcjwebplugin.so)

Another, and likely the best option is to use the source for JAVA as it has been GPL'd, so <B>WE</B> can fix it! :)

Of course you can also run the 32bit browser on the 64bit O/S and use the 32 bit plugin. While not desireable, it certainly gets ones by just fine.

Don't get me wrong, I'm beating my head against the wall as well, but the JAVA team deserves respect. I'm a senior manager at a Fortune 150 company, I was a senior systems engineer in the same environment, I know that in no way will beating up folks will motivate them to move this up in the priority stack. Donuts, pizza, beer, paintball, stock,...etc are better motivators than flaming them.

So Sun JAVA developers, where do you want the pizza delivered? ;)

Woohoo! Finally an update from Sun! On Jan 16/07 the 'Evaluation' details found near the top of this document were updated with Sun's new commitment:
...
"This RFE has finally been comitted to the dolphin (JDK 1.7) release.
Posted Date : 2007-01-16 22:20:04.0"
...

JDK1.7 will ship open source, so now is the time for all concerned developers to join together for this fundamental change to the deployment architecture.

See my 28-Sept-2006 post above for links to do that.

Submitted On 23-FEB-2007
Addendum to woohoo post above :)

Well, it seems that I needlessly pulled the last of my hair out trying to produce 64-bit functionality for Java Control Panel, Plugin and Webstart. Taadaa, there is a work-around! ... 32-bit, but at least I can now open Eclipse in my main OS! We can now be patient waiting/participating in the open-source JDK7 development process to finally support 64-bit.

This work-around is for AMD64 running WinXP x64 OS, but it may be relevant for other 64-bit OS as well:

The jre included with the 64-bit jdk is a private jre serving the jdk, so to allow your 64-bit environment to correctly use Java deployment, install the public 32-bit jre. It will install into ../Program Files (x86)/Java and auto-create the classpath ... you can find the Java control panel icon in Control Panel/View x86 Control Panel Icons folder.

For Eclipse users:

I attempted to open eclipse-SDK-3.2-win32-x86_64 with a double-click, and received the same error message as before installing the public jre:
org.eclipse.osgi.framework.internal.core.SystemBundleActivator.start() of bundle system.bundle.
...I also attempted to open it using the dos command:
 C:\eclipse-SDK-3.2-win32-x86_64\eclipse\eclipse -vm "C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre1.6.0\bin\javaw"
... and received a new error message:
java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: C:\eclipse-SDK-3.2-win32-x86_64\eclipse\configuration\org.eclipse.osgi\bundles\79\1\.cp\swt-win32-3232.dll: Can't load AMD 64-bit .dll on a IA 32-bit platform.
... if you're a 64-bit .inf guru please post your solution to link to the AMD 64-bit .dll :)

So, I installed the 32-bit Eclipse, and it loads with no problems ... choose a new name for the workspace to preserve your 64-bit Eclipse future workspace environment, if already installed.

I'm a Java developer and I do my development against the Sun 1.5 JDK for Linux on AMD_64. Unfortunately, the browser plugin is not available for the 64-bit version of the Sun JDK for Linux. What's the reason for this? Is Sun working a browser plugin for 64-bit Linux? Sun and AMD appear to have a great relationship, so this strikes me as very odd.

Thread: webstart in windows 64

...
trembovetski

AFAIK we don't ship webstart or plugin with our 64-bit binaries, since they're considered to be used in a 'server' or 'development' environments and thus don't need plugin/webstart.

If you need webstart/plugin, you can install a 32-bit jdk (assuming your browser is also 32-bit).

I believe 64-bit plugin is under discussion now and the current state could be reconsidered in the future at least for some 64-bit platforms.

I'll defer to deployment folks (Stanley Ho - http://weblogs.java.net/blog/stanleyh/) for further information..

Thanks,

Now that Inte's got 64bit platform, will this BUG be fixed actually?

Will it really come out in JDK 1.7? When will it be?

As far as I can tell, we've been waiting for a plugin for more than 2 years.

This should be an extremely huge drawback for Sun and Java.

welp. considering how long this has been ongoing (4 YEARS, 4 1/2 MONTHS). the only conclusion is that sun *doesn't know how* to do a 64 bit browser plugin for java.

no surprise.. they win the lawsuit against microsoft, microsoft no longer does a java vm, now sun sits on their arses and doesn't innovate or develop.. not even justto keep up with the times. no incentive to, no competition to worry about, etc, etc....

maybe some day when the necessary code is open-sourced by sun, some bloke will feel sorry for sun and java and whip up a proper 64 bit plugin... the question is.. will it be before or after microsoft releases vista +2 ??

AMD is dropping the "64" tag from their new series of processors, they will be called Athlon X2 instead of Athlon 64 X2. Almost all processors in the market are 64 bits by now so that its marketing value is not significant anymore.
Maybe Sun can resist to develop a 64 bit plugin for a few years more and everyone will forget the distinction between 32 and 64 bits.

Haha... Sun is a 32bit computing shop.

You have two choices:
1. Use a desktop that is 4-5 years old and the Sun java plugin
2. Use a recent 64bit desktop and GCJ or blackdown java plugin

Submitted On 23-AUG-2007
You know, Sun, the most important (and one of the only useful in my opinion) implementation of your bloated technology is the WEB integration! How is it possible that Dell has all but stopped selling 32-bit processors and you are still sitting on your hands about this? Now I see that it has been committed to DOLPHIN! What is wrong with the developers here? Getting Microsoftitis, you are so ubiquitous that you just don't care anymore?

this seems to be related to really outdated code in the netscape plugin (the documentation points to the fact that one needs to use GCC 2.95 to compile the plugin...). i remember the transition from libc5 to libc6 was an issue as well in those days... since then, nothing has changed... seems like Java support in netscape-kind browsers (OJI) is more like a hack than a serious piece of software somehow -- hard to say whose fault this is...
anyway: running applets using the appletviewer shipped with the jdk works nice with all applets i have seen so far on amd64. just get this thing work with mozilla somehow...

I work in a _big_ company. We've to choose between different solutions for our new SAP environment. SUN was one of the competitors.
Since I have "some" influence in these decision, I pushed in the right way, and I made my colleagues (they're also managers) to choose another brand.
SUN, you lost not less than 10.000.000 Euro.

Do you want to know one of the reason? Ok. also if the solutions were nearly similar, I don't like to feed company that are lazy (this is the right word!) like you. If you're so lazy for stupid things like the one reported in this page, how can you be, for _really_ difficult issues?

Goodbye SUN.

This is just amazing. Four and a half years of nothing. I can only assume that there are non technical issues blocking this bug from being fixed. Whatever it is, I fear this really needs to escelate and get some publicity until some manager cares to push this RFE. Maybe with the work on JavaFX and enhancements planned for the JRE in that respect, which is expected for JDK6 still, also a 64bit plugin will be released?

This is a fundamental necessity. It should have been released years ago. Deferring it to Dolphin when it should have come with Tiger -- frankly, that's just laziness, and nothing more or less than that.

I would suggest putting the utmost priority in this. It is simply ridiculous to have to wait almost five years for something that is probably trivial coding-wise but extremely important to end-users. The fact that development in other areas of the Java platform continues happily as ever only enforces that.

The x86_64 architecture is a standard nowadays, and there is no excuse not to support it properly, especially in such fundamental aspects as the browser plug-in. Sorry, Sun, but I'm quite cross with you for this. (Still lovin' Java, though. :)

I was just having a read of Java's history (http://ei.cs.vt.edu/book/chap1/java_hist.html). Seems it took about 4 years to go from serious project to having browser support in Netscape. One wonders why it is taking LONGER than that to get 64-bit browser support. I guess they have to write twice as much code to fill in all those extra bits.

From what I found, JDK 1.7 is expected around January 2009; so that means more than a year until a 64-bit plugin and a total time of 6 years since somebody had the foresight to submitt this request. Sun would do well to give the original poster an upper management job.

Thinking outside the box and trying to grasp the big picture here, the following come to mind:

1) If this issue has been on the table for 5 years, why should we believe today that "next year" we will have 64 bit JRE for Windows? It's like hearing "the check is in the mail."

2) Since Sun & Microsoft litigated over VM and Sun prevailed, MS no longer has a VM. That means MS's 64 bit OS has no VM and Sun has the market monopoly on VM with their JRE. Sun has and has had for some while, 64 bit operating systems. Does Sun's dragging of the feet on this issue compel users to switch from MS operating systems to Sun operating systems? It did with me; I bought a Sun 64 bit operating system so I can run 64 bit JRE on my 64 bit platform.

3) Should the litigation be re-opened, or new litigation commenced over this issue? I hope it does not come to that.

If Sun has 64 bit JRE that will run on Windows 64 bit platfroms, why do they refuse to release it?

Do you really think that after five years of this issue being on the table that Sun does not have the build? Come on now!

Hopefully they will just release it sooner rather then later so we don't have to resort to litigation and/ or continue to hear "the check's in the mail."

Lets face it, this whole bug reporting thing in Sun Microsystem is useless.

They ignore 64bit platform as much as they are able - the plugin is not the only thing that does not work on amd64 - let's mention java web, start "missing" since 2002 (bug ID 4626735).

I think it must some kind of .NET market support.

I think we were being traded by Sun . Sun and Microsoft may have some agreement under table.

We know that Microsoft push IE7 hardly now. It will be good to request Sun to delay 64 bit plug in for firefox . Such that IE7 can win the browser war. ( The closed source and open source browser war).

If MS win the browser war, Open source will be killed . No one will use Linux any more if it could not brows Internet.

In this thinking, I guest Sun will be bought/join by Microsoft very soon. That is why they are unwilling to provide the Java 64 bit plug in for FireFox.

Otherwise, I do not see any reason , why Sun is ignore the strong request on 64 bit plug in for firefox.

If you see the Novel and Microsoft agreement , you may agree this.

Sun may be the seconder trader on open source after Novell.

It is simple , Sun business is not good, Microsoft have money to buy .

As for me, I'm the lead engineer at a very large software company (one of the top 5 largest in the world) that wants to build a product that uses the Java plug-in, but I can't recommend that course of action if it's going to alienate all our Linux users! A major big one that shows us why Java "commercial release" is dead.
 - NO ANSWER from RFE monitors for 3 years
 - strategic mistakes "64bits si for servers only". Lol ! Heaviest video games and multimedia tasks are actually and now reaching the 32bit 4GB limit. Every single computer on the market is 64bits ready.
 - Sun devs are not able to compile a source code when it is not a 32bit one. Is a plugin harder to compile than a standard JVM ?

I know that Java applets are, like Flash, 32bits systems, ActiveX, the "born dead" Webstart, a ghost from the past that will (at least must) sink into oblivion. But entreprise support is required, some companies are using applets and may switch to 64bits workstation sooner that Sun is expecting.

Early 2009?? Are you kidding me?? This bug is OVER 5 years old and you're telling me it's going to take another YEAR to get the support?? If Java is already working in 64-bit O/Ss I find it hard to believe that getting the plugin code finished is going to take that long!?

Early 2009? Incredible! People who have supported Sun and Java for years are ignored yet again. It may be time to migrate my skill set to Ruby and say goodbye to Java anyway. Any company that dismisses its user community so blatantly deserves to lose market share.

hopefully we don't switch to 128 bit procesors, cause we might die before getting 64bit plugin. But my kids will be able to play with it ! That counts for something, right ? ... hehe

Is early 2009 real?

Given that 6u10 will provide out-of-process operation and a smaller, tighter, cleaner in-process component communicating with it that would seem to solve >90% of the issues. Do the last <10% really require a delay until 2009?

You guys are idiots. You are turning a whole community of users and developers against you because you are too lazy to recompile a few lines of code under a new platform. Or perhaps you are not idiots and you are doing this on purpose.
Either way, I've added you to my list of evil companies. If I will ever have the opportunity to choose myself between using your services/products or not, I know which way I'll go.

It is an understatement to say that Sun is not generating any good will by being slow to release a 64 bit browser plugin. It would be nice to have some sort of feedback on why this is such a protracted effort. Without that kind of information, the community that wants and needs this will assume it is being spurned without reason. Throw us a bone here!

Why are plugins so difficult to recompile? Adobe is doing the same thing with flash, ignoring 64-bit support. It's kind of annoying when you get yourself a 64-bit processor and install a new operating system just to realize that the biggest software companies are those who doesn't bother to fully support this new platform. I mean, sun probably have a turnover of several billions a year, so they should have enough money to afford to pay for a guy to work on this for a couple of weeks to fix it.. but nahh, thats not cost efficient. In fact, it is ignorances and inabilities to adapt to new technology like this one who makes many companies loose their leading positions on the market.

6 years to recompile that plug-in for 64 bit?
wa hahaha
It didn't take even 5 monts to make a port for 64 bit of pcsx and mupen64, I don't think that plugin is any complex compared to an emulator with dinamic recompiler.

And still you dare to say that java runs even in a stove!!!
If python had half of your publicity and lies it would be as known as java.

This is a major drawback for communicating with SSL applets with my work. Installing 32-bit JRE and JSSE do not work (or at least I don't know how to properly do it). All our computers are 64-bit and we have converted all our software here at work. We expect the same of SUN. THANK YOU

Once Java 6 Update 10 is out with its out-of-process model and new, small in-process nub, I'd hope/assume it should be rather trivial to provide 64-bit plug-ins for Windows, Linux, and Solaris (i.e. all 3 platforms Sun releases JVMs for). [If not then some rather nasty shortcut was taken in 6u10.]

I can't believe that Sun still has not released the 64bit Java plug in.

This is really Sad for a company that loves to overdue their updates and versions of java and caint even get their java working on the 64bit platform after almost three years.

I'm not impressed at all with Suns decision to hold back this project. with decissions like these I will not be so open to try Java or Sun products in the future in reaction.

I am surprised that this bug is dragging for so long. AMD64 architecture processors (both AMD and Intel) are more or less standard for all new machines. Luckily servers do not need this plugin. Anyway openJDK is a partial solution because it works with applets, does not work with Java Web Start.

so what sun is essentially saying here is that java is not a viable choice if you want to have a new platform supported in less than six years.

citrix_metaframe
Users of Citrix Metaframe rely on a Java applet for `universal' remote access to Metaframe services (desktop sessions). This `universal' access model is being hamstringed by the missing 64 bit plug-in.

Typically, if the plugin is not found, the user is redirected to Sun's web site to download Java. However, after downloading and installing 64 bit Java, there is still no plugin - so the user is redirected back to Sun's web site again. The user is given no feedback about why they are going around in circles like this - from the user's point of view, Java is installed, so they don't understand why they get messages about a missing plug-in.

This is a severe usability issue: it is confusing for end users and support personnel when there are things missing from some versions of the Java package. It is definitely Sun's responsibility, and not the fault of Citrix, to ensure that the Java packages are complete and equivalent across all supported platforms: 32 bit, 64 bit.

Excluding an increasing number of customers for almost six years now is ridiculous, if they really want to keep Java in business. In a current german computer magazine James Gosling is talking about trying to get applets back to the desktop, but he does not seem to see the most basic reasons, why Java has lost its customers.

There are more bugs and had been more bugs beyond this one eliminating the chances to deploy Applets or even Java applications to public, as critical bugs too often do not get fixed in an even somehow reasonable time.

"Your program ist not working anymore? Oh, no problem - just wait 3 / 4 / 5 / 6 years, and it will work again! No need to do anything about it..."

Who cares? The IcedTeaPlugin works well for 64 bit Linux. While it might be nice to have a sun certified solution, this has become more of an academic point.

mack3457, agreed on the buggyness of applets, though I've been pretty impressed by 6u10 and the new plug-in. FWIW, I've been working on the Pivot project (www.pivot-toolkit.org) to address the issues in AWT/Swing.

libnpjp2.so works, but doesn't declare it's version properly. Hence when I go to a Raritan network KVM it tries to detect the version, says it isn't at least 1.4.2 and redirects me to Sun.

If I use greasemonkey to disable the javascript that does the version check it does work.

Thanks for addressing this!

Generally works in Ubuntu 8.10 64-bit, even PKCS#11 support (online banking).

There seem still be some rough edges, e.g. everything works well for one site, but subsequent attempts fail (initialization/multithreading?). After restarting Firefox and killing all Java instances everything works again.

Thanks again and best wishes for the upcoming 2009!

Has it be decided to postpone the fix to the next bugfix release (java 6u17 ?) or to wait for java 7 ?
