Here's a dump of the java_install.log:

I've encountered the same problem attempting to install the

you need this or not but here are my details.

I had the same problem (error 1722 during
installation), and after some digging in my registry,
managed to work through it. (running windows XP,
installing JDK 1.4.2_04).
I previously had a JDK 1.3.1 installed on my machine.
Before installing new 1.4.2, i ran the "uninstall" of the
1.3.1 stuff (add/remove programs). The uninstall
completed okay. But (not finding out till later), there
was a registry entry remaining (for teh javaw.exe
program) pointing to a Program Files/Java directory
that no longer existed.
My JDK 1.4.2 installation failed during install of
the "public JRE". In the end, I ran the uninstall again,
then manually removed all folders left lying around,
and then manually removed any registry entries
pointing to those directories I had removed. Then
After this, the JDK 1.4.2 install (including public JRE)
