Work Around

Evaluation
For the users who request Chinese documentation, could you please comment on which types of docs would help you the greatest if we localize them into Chinese [general info, api spec, language spec, guide to features (internationalization, other topics), tool docs, demos/tutorials, relnotes, api doc] . We appreciate your comments.
  xxxxx@xxxxx 2004-12-16 02:14:29 GMT

We would like to begin to provide *partial* Chinese documents in future J2SE 5.0 update and J2SE 6.0 releases. We cannot translate everything due to the huge word count and high cost of translation and testing.

  xxxxx@xxxxx 2005-03-07 22:57:26 GMT

After various studies and polls, we have decided to localized api doc for S.Chinese for J2SE 5.0 and 6.0 releases.

We are also looking into the possibility of open source project to work with the community to localize more documents into more languages if there is enough interest.
  xxxxx@xxxxx 2005-06-01 21:12:05 GMT
J2SE 5.0 version of API doc is being posted to Chinese developer site gradually:
http://gceclub.sun.com.cn/chinese_java_docs.html
The schedule can also be found on this page. Thanks for your patience and support.

6.0 version will be translated after 5.0 version.

Is this a joke?
If Sun cares about Chinese market, they will centainly do it. If they don't , ppl can just move to MS .NET. Why should we beg for it? Don't think Java will last any longer than 5 years.

What ?! Don't tell me that Chinese programmers don't know how to read english.

Everybody can translate the docs in their own language, they don't need Sun for that. China is a big country, nobody there already started the translation ? Perhaps because not a lot of people "really" need it.

Yes, yes, Sun must localize its docs into Chinese. China is the strongest, Chinese is the most. Our country border spreads to where our Chinese people inhabits. If we want, we can conquer all the East Asian countries within serveral days. Our economy are going to catch up with American and will go ahead of it. Ha ha

Our people, our culture is number one. Why we need English??

Sun must localize its docs into Chinese

I suggest that instead of putting their time/effort into translations Sun should instead provide a community mechanism by which volunteers can contribute documentation for individual languages and packages/classes/methods. This would allow those sufficiently motivated to provide documentation in *any * language. Also, perhaps, putting some effort into clarifying the existing contracts and removing ambiguities (in English docs) of some packages/classes/methods to make development for English speakers, and translation for others, easier.

For none English documentation, perhaps something along the lines of a database backed, vetted Wiki server, is needed perhaps? There'd needs to be some sort of 'usefulness' or 'vetting' system, so that not all random comments or additions immediately appear to all users. Some sort of statistics to identify which packages are started, in translation, fully documented (or changed and needing new documentation) would be needed. (Something like the OBOS [Open BEOS] package development /combatibility tables for example.)

Obviously, any legal or copyright considerations need to be looked at first.

Regards to Java developers in *all* languages and locales.

If you in consideration of JAVA future, I think the china this mass space perhaps is you the best shape space, because the china have in the world 1/5 person, and have 1,600,000,000 use the Chinese, I think, if the JAVA cans make the document Chinese, Chinese languages to turn, vs you of shape is certain and big helpful, because the Chinese also like the JAVA very much.

Java API doco is very obviously taken from the javadoc in the source. At present, the documentation comment mechanism does not have a multilingual feature.

It is pretty clear that you would not want to include multilingual documentation in the source itself, so we would need a mechanism to allow one to override the text of doc comments in the source with text in an externally suupplied file.

Fortunately, the doclet API easily allows this. So what is needed is a colabarative open-source project to supply a doclet which will retreive documentation from a file (or a wb page), and a place where multilingual API documentation can be submitted and per-reviewed.

One really has to doubt how good Chinese programmers are given such an array of comments and God-know how many of the votes are from fake accounts. Why should the documents be translated when these quarter-of-the-human-race can't border with learning perhaps the only truely International human language that Java bases upon? Number of people, with neither quality nor money to backup, is just a number. The reason to have Japanese documents is stated clearly, yet foul kept being yelled, and 4-letter comments kept being added on every week.

If the time of votting and typing comments are being translated into translating the important documents, and if Chinese people are so smart and so powerful and so united and so distaste English and so on, I think there would be a good chance we don't need this RFE long ago.

That is, if we assume that the votes are mostly casted by different people.

If the Chinese people can't face the fact that Japan is, for now, indeed stronger then China in almost all aspects including economy, technology, military, unity, civilness, lawfulness, and many others, then there's still a very, very long way to go.

As a matter of fact, Chinese programmers may need a complete set of Chinese tutorials more then the documentations, since from what I observed that's what we Chinese people like, do we not? Sigh.

I figure in China , most programmers "educated enough" to need these docs , are good enough to understand the English versions. I don't know a single one who doesn't.
For the voted java-lovers : just one more course to spend a little more time on , or just a dictionary , big deal ?

Such documentation translation could be a good place for an open source community effort.

I'd sooner see Sun focus on fixing what only they can fix -- the JVM (unless/until it is open sourced).

If Sun could provide a site, some backing and organization for a translation effort this would seem a better use of their limited resources than doing all the translation themselves. [From Sun's perspective, where's the money in translating the documentation themselves?]

I don't think that is a bad thing to translate the documents in chinese. But, how about other languages?

How about portuguese? Or spanish? Or even French? Arabic would be usefull too!

JDK documentation is available in many languages.

Hint: check your local book store.

If there is no book in your language, write one, sell it, and become a millionaire! Easy, isn't it!

If you don't want to pay for the documentation, write it and post it on the net free of charge.

Yes, please make it open source and make whoever wants it to be translate it, translate it themselves. Please use your manpower/resources on bugs like the Design by Contract facility or the unmap method to ByteBuffer bug. Don't waste your manpower/resources on this.

Mark my words, Sun: if you concede to this ridiculous demand and provide documentation in Chinese, it's only a matter of time before hordes of Indian/Russian/Malay/<insert some big race here> programmers start clamoring for documentation in their language.

why there isn't a way to add translation when you use jdk's help?
Like , "This method hasn't been translate. Would you like do it?"
Then click , go to a webpage, select language, then put the translate text on it and wait sun's verify or people's vote.

so each one can help to add some translation.
All locale and language will be done in a short time.
I guess.

if some is translated, you can find a tip near the method. like, "find the translation of your language."
Click, then go to web.

why must the api be one document?

it's ok only if there is a place we can find the trans.
