The crash also occurs on various flavors of linux (such as SuSE, Fedora and redhat).

Evaluation
Asked the customer to try B55 from
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/snapshots/
Still had the same failure
  xxxxx@xxxxx 2004-06-11

Sent the customer a fastdebug build and the failure went away. Seems like something's been fixed. Waiting for B56 to show up before closing
  xxxxx@xxxxx 2004-06-15

I ran with the following configs on RedHat AS4 (2.6.9 Kernel) with no crashes
Eclipse 3.1M6	JDK1.6-b30
Eclipse 3.1M6	JDK1.5
Eclipse 3.0.2	JDK1.6-b30
Eclipse 3.0.2	JDK1.5

Since we don't have Gentoo installed here, and its not a supported platform for Java or Eclipse, I think its ok to close this bug as will not fix.
  xxxxx@xxxxx 2005-04-06 17:14:12 GMT
While I'm working on this bug, there is a better workaround then just reverting
to the interpreter. Create the following file in your Eclipse directory:

.hotspot_compiler

With the contents of:

exclude org/eclipse/jdt/internal/compiler/parser/Scanner optimizedCurrentTokenSource3
exclude org/eclipse/jdt/internal/core/util/CommentRecorderScanner recordComment

Since its a dot file, it'll be hidden from ls, etc so remember to remove it when
I do get this fixed :) Performance should be much better than the interpreter.

Sun, don't be lame. Gentoo is a major distribution. Would you rather have us stay on Blackdown, or move to Mono instead?

This is a pretty serious problem with my machine (Suse 9.3, x86_64). Because of this problem, Java 1.5 is unusable and I have to stop using it. This happens very regularly.

Happens *very* frequently on my Fedora Core 3 x86_64 OS.

java version "1.5.0_03"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_03-b07)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 1.5.0_03-b07, mixed mode)

Dual AMD Opteron 250, 6 GB RAM.

Looking at others' problems, it seems that there's some issue in the 64-bit JVM.

This case happens often on my PC with 1.5.0_04, Eclipse 3.2M1. SuSE 9.3.

Seeing similar crashes on SuSE 9.3 with Eclipse 3.1 (64bit) and Java 1.5.0_03 (64bit) on a AMD64 X2

Serious problem, because it renders this setup almost useles.

I am somewhat puzzled by the symptoms of this crash, because it happenes at quite different situations. The crash is reproducible in a certain sense: if I fire up Eclipse again and do exactly the same. But
if I manage to get things done in a diferent way, I can pass the same situation without crash.
Intuitively, the common denomiator is: there is some internal indexing going on at the moment of the crash in a background thread.

But the crash dumps point at quite different locations, sometimes evein in native code.

Using the Online Help search funcion for the first time (normaly triggers indexing of all installed help pages):

I've tried all manner of VM switches, all to no avail.

The only workaround I have found to totally irradicate this issue is to use the IBM VM (Im running 64bit Ubuntu and all is stable).

Until SUN can fix this I cant use their VM.

I am also getting this error on the following setup:

Fedora Core 4 , kernel 2.6.12-1.1398_FC4.x86_64 (amd64)
jdk1.5.0_03 and jdk1.5.0_05
Eclipse 3.1 and 3.1.1

What I have noticed is that it always crashes when you try to work with lots of big projects. I'm using about 11 projects with java files upto 50,000 lines. It crashes just after checking all the projects out and switching to the Resource Perspective or trying to open one of the big java files just after checking out all the projects.

Using the .hotspot_compiler workaround seems to solve things for me, thus far.
