Please up the priority, it's 2009 and it's been 5 years since this was posted. StringBuilder is in common use now & StringBuffer is far less common (like Hashtable). I have a situation where I am writing a function that takes a StringBuilder as input and I need to create the functionality of appendReplacement and appendTail. The way I see it, I have to create an empty StringBuffer, call the appendReplacement and appendTail, then toString() on the StringBuffer, and pass the result to StringBuilder.append().
