EVALUATION

Based on the following MSDN article:

I've tried setting the following registry keys manually and it seems to have addressed the problem:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
     Applications
          java.exe
               IsHostApp

and

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
     Applications
          javaw.exe
               IsHostApp

Note that there's no path required before the executable names.
